Finished hockey themed bookmarks on sitting on a book.

Who doesn’t love a cute bookmark?! I am a big book reader and always have multiple books on the go, so naturally, I would need multiple bookmarks. I am not sure about everyone else, but I like to have bookmarks that match the book. Right now, my obsession is hockey romance, and I don’t see that ending anytime soon, so I made a few hockey-themed bookmarks.

These can be done in so many different images and different colours the possibilities are endless. I did two one in my favourite colour and one in Toronto Maple Leafs colours.

Materials

  • Acrylic bookmark blank
  • Vinyl black - for the sticks and puck
  • Vinyl for the hearts - desired colour
  • Cricut Design Space
  • Cricut machine - I used the Joy
  • Fine point premium blade
  • Green mat
  • Brayer to help adhere the vinyl to the mat
  • Weeding pen
  • Transfer tape
  • Scraping tool
  • Scissors
  • Alcohol wipes - help clean any dirt & oils off the bookmark
  • Self-healing mat - I use the grid to help keep the bookmark straight and a surface to cut the extra vinyl off if necessary*
  • Excato knife*
  • Tape to hold the bookmark to the self-healing mat*
  • Tassel or ribbon
  • Embellishments (optional)

*not all of these are necessary, it just depends on how the design will go on.

How to create

Making the design

  1. Open Cricut Design Space and open up a new project.
  2. Go to shapes, add a rectangle and adjust the size you are working with. This is just to help with space and sizing.
  3. Go to images and search hockey stick or hockey, then add the image you want to work with.
  4. Search for the heart image you want to work with then add the image.
  5. Take the hockey stick image, move it over the rectangle and adjust it to the size you want.
  6. Duplicate the image as many times as you need. You may need to adjust the size and placement if some of the stick hangs off the edge, that’s okay. Play with it till you are happy.
  7. Do the same thing with the heart image.
  8. Adjust the colours if needed.

When you cut the images and add them to the bookmark, they might not line up the same way as they are on screen.

Cutting images

  1. Go to make when ready to cut the images.
  2. Add the vinyl to the mat(s) and use the brayer to help adhere it to the mat.
  3. Pick the mat for “any material” and click “confirm”.
  4. Click “continue” when you are ready to start the cut.
  5. I pick the material I use, either small letters or premium vinyl. I have some custom settings, so I sometimes use that one.
  6. Load the mat into the machine when the light starts blinking and when prompted in Design Space.
  7. When prompted, click “go” to start the cut.
  8. Click “unload” when the cut is done.
  9. Repeat as needed for each colour.

You can either attach the images to have them cut the way you have it set up, or leave it and just individually add the images to the bookmark.

Weeding the images

  1. Flip the mat over and peel the vinyl off the mat.
  2. Take the weeding pen or tool and remove the vinyl you don’t need.
  3. Cut the access vinyl if you feel like it is getting in your way.*
  4. Repeat as needed.

*This part isn’t necessary, I do it to make it easier and cleaner when weeding.

Removing the extra vinyl

  1. Set the self-healing mat up so you can cut on it.
  2. Flip the bookmark over so the side with the vinyl is facing down.
  3. Take the Exacto knife and cut off any extra vinyl hanging off the edge.

Adding the images

Blank bookmarks and tassels.
  1. Remove the plastic protective layer.
  2. Add a piece of tape on the back of the bookmark and line it up with the lines on the self-healing mat.*
  3. Take the alcohol wipe and clean off the bookmark to help remove dirt and oils.
  4. Cut the hockey sticks into individual pieces. This gave me more control over the placement of the images.
  5. Cut a piece of transfer tape to the size you need.
  6. Add the transfer tape and peel the backing off.
  7. Now place the image on the bookmark blank the image doesn’t have to be fully on the blank you can have it hang off and remove the access
  8. Repeat as needed until you have the bookmark covered.

*This doesn’t need to be done but I always do it to keep it from moving and keep it straight if needed.

Adding the tassel or other embellishments

  1. Removing the protective covering if you haven’t already.
  2. Thread through the tassel, string or ribbon and embellishments.

You now have a fun hockey bookmark to go with all the hockey romance novels you read!
