This is a project that I have wanted to do for a while. I was looking for something specific for the bedroom side tables. I couldn’t find it, so I made my own. I wanted something blue and had a floral or similar pattern on the front. I looked for months and even thought about buying something blue and just adding the pattern, but I didn’t find anything I liked or at a reasonable price.
I spent a few days deciding on a pattern for the front. The blue paint that I used worked so well with the colour of our bed and sheets. I originally was going to use the knobs that came with it, but one night I was looking on Amazon and found perfect knobs that matched the colours and pattern. After buying everything, each one came out to about $130.00.
These were such a fun project, and they turned out just how I wanted. They aren’t perfect; the contact paper didn’t line up perfectly, but you can hardly notice it unless you stare at it or point it out. These give us a little more storage. I use mine to store my smaller purses and wallets. One drawer is for all the smaller crossbody bags and dress purses. They are all lined up, all I have to do is open the drawer, get what I need and go. No more digging around in my closet.
There are so many options for customizing these to match your room or where you want to put them. If you are on a budget and looking for more storage, this is a great way to make it happen. I was seriously over the moon with how these turned out and look in the bedroom.
Materials
- IKEA Rast dresser x 2
- Blue and white contact paper (Amazon)
- Blue and white dresser knobs (Amazon)
- White paint (what I had around the house)
- Blue paint (Fusion) or desired paint
- Paint roller
- Paint brushes
- Paint tray
- Drop cloth
- Exacto knife
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Squeegee/scraper to help apply the contact paper
- Something to wipe off any dust or stuff on the dresser
- Sandpaper
Some of the items you will need may already be around the house from other projects, get them from Amazon, or you can find them at the dollar store, like the painting materials, the sandpaper and the dusters.
Either you can paint the dresser first, or assemble it first. I assembled first, so I didn't have pieces of the dresser scattered through the house, drying.
How to create
- Assemble the dresser and the drawers minus the knobs.
- If there are any rough spots, you can sand them down before you paint.
Painting the dresser
- Put the dresser on top of either cardboard or a drop cloth, something that would catch the paint if it drips.
- Paint the dresser.
- After the first coat has dried, apply any necessary touch-ups or a second coat.
Drawers

- Grab the white paint and a paintbrush, and paint around the edges of the drawer front. I did two coats.*
- Measure the amount of contact paper you will need, but leave a little overlap to cut off at the edges. **
- Peel off the backing and apply it to the front of the drawer, and use the squeegee/scraper to help smooth it out. Take your time applying it. It’s not going to be perfect, and that is okay!
- Take the Exacto knife and run it along the edges, cutting off the excess contact paper. You may scrape some of the paint off, and that is okay, just take some paint to touch it up.
- Repeat for the other drawers.
- Put the drawers in the dresser.
- Add the dresser knobs.
- When you are done, take some time and look to see if any spots need touch up.
*Depending on the colour of the contact paper you use, use a paint colour that best matches.
**If the contact paper is too small for the front of the drawer, you will need to cut more and line it up, much like you would with wallpaper.
