Finished 3D egg banner
3D egg banner

With Easter coming I wanted to make a different banner that wasn’t just bunnies and wasn't flat. I wanted to make one with a little more depth. I also saw something similar to this on Pinterest and decided to make one. It turned out not too bad for a tester. I have never done a 3D project like this one before. Most of the 3D projects you'll find here from me are done with foam dots.

I had no problems with the bunting banner piece that was already done and the egg with the scoreline was pretty easy to make. It was more egg assembly where I had trouble at first. The first few times I had a hard time getting the edges to line up properly but after a few tries I finally got it figured out. Placing the egg on the banner piece wasn’t too bad, I just had to get the centring going.

Once the banner is done string it and hang it out for everyone to see!

Materials

  • White cardstock - for the base of the banner or preferred choice of colour
  • 5 different patterned cardstock - for 3D egg or preferred choice
  • Cricut machine
  • Scoring wheel or scoring stylus
  • 12 by 12 green mat(s)
  • Cricut Design Space
  • Brayer
  • Glue tape or stick
  • Twine or string for hanging
  • Images from Design Space
  • Ruler
  • Self-healing mat - I use it to help with placing and keeping the egg straight
  • Bone folder to help flatten the fold of the egg
  • Spatula to help remove the cardstock if it is stuck to the mat
  • Scissors to cut the twine or string
  • Wooden beads or embellishments (optional)

How to create

Finding the banner

  1. Open Cricut Design Space.
  2. Go to “images” and search for the bunting banner piece you want to work with.
  3. Adjust the banner to around 4.5" by 5.5" or the desired size.
  4. Duplicate the banner piece to get as many as you need.

Creating the egg template

Screen show of egg template in design space
  1. Go to “images” and search for an egg shape you want to work with.
  2. Adjust the size to around 2.75" by 4" or to the desired size. Move the egg on top of the banner piece to get an idea of sizing.
  3. To add the scoreline go to “shapes” choose the line option and insert it (it doesn’t say that it’s for scoring but it is).
  4. Adjust the length of the scoreline to 4" to match the height of the egg.
  5. Click and drag the mouse over the scoreline and the egg.
  6. Go to “align” at the top and choose “center”, the scoreline should now be centred on the egg.
  7. Make sure the scoreline and egg are still highlighted go to the bottom and click “attach”.
  8. Duplicate the egg 4 times you should now have 5 eggs. You can do more if you want the egg to look a little fuller.

Cutting the images

  1. Turn on the Cricut machine and have the scoring blade or stylus tool and the fine point blade ready.
  2. Add the cardstock matching the image on the cut screen for example the cardstock to match the egg or the banner piece to the mat and run the brayer over the cardstock to help adhere it to the mat*
  3. Go to “make it” at the top of the screen.
  4. Choose the mat “for any material” and click “continue”.
  5. Pick “cardstock 80lb” material or pick the one that best works for you.
  6. Load the mat into the machine when the “arrow” starts flashing.
  7. Add the scoring wheel or scoring stylus when prompted (this is for the eggs). Or the fine point blade.
  8. Click the flashing “C” to start the cut when prompted.
  9. Repeat and follow the prompts as many times as needed.

Removing the images

  1. When the cut is done unload the mat when the “arrow” starts flashing.
  2. Flip the mat over and peel the mat off the cardstock to help keep the cardstock from curling and take your time. Use the spatula to help remove the cardstock if needed.
  3. Place the cutouts off to the side until everything is cut and ready to assemble.
  4. Repeat as needed.

Assembling the egg

Eggs folded in half
Eggs folded
  1. Fold each egg cutout along the scoreline.
  2. Take the bone folder and run it along the edge (or use a finger or an old points card).
  3. Keep the egg cutouts folded so it is only half the egg
  4. Place the folded edge so it is facing out to the right side
  5. Apply the glue to the back half of the egg.
  6. Place another egg shape on top of the egg with glue and line up the edges.
  7. Do this for the other egg pieces of matching colour or design so they are stacked and run the brayer over them to help adhere the eggs together.
  8. Repeat this for the other eggs that need to be assembled.

Assembly of the banner

3D egg on banner piece
  1. Place a banner piece onto a self-healing mat. Use a small piece of washi tape to hold the banner piece down for placing.
  2. Put some glue on the eggs but do not close the egg.
  3. Place the egg on the banner piece and use the self-healing mat or the ruler to help to center the egg.
  4. Repeat this for every egg and banner piece until they are all glued together.
  5. Thread the twine or string through the banner pieces.

Notes

  • If you feel the paper isn’t stuck down enough take washi tape or masking tape and place it around the edges of the paper. I have to do that every once and a while
